The town incorporated in 1964 to maintain local control over development and population growth. Today, Portola Valley boasts around 1,900 acres of permanent open space. The town is home to over 4,000 people, with 1,895 housing units -- nearly 80 percent of which are owner occupied, according to 2010 United States Census Bureau data.
According to Forbes' 2014 list of America's Most Expensive ZIP Codes, the median home price in the town was $3,255,885. Portola Valley also boasts two equestrian centers; a number of soccer, baseball, and softball fields; and Triangle Park. The Spring Ridge Trail runs from Skyline Boulevard and is popular with cyclists.
